The Sumatran rainforest is a deeply tragic story of deforestation. The sixth largest island in the world was once covered with thick jungle from coast to coast. Now, only pockets of rainforest remain, largely within the UNESCO protected Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. Illegal logging and palm oil production is chiefly to blame. With almost 50% of Sumatra’s tropical rainforest lost in the last 35 years, the likelihood is that outside these protected areas all remaining rainforest in Sumatra will disappear within 20 years. Tigers, rhinos, orangutans and elephants are all severely at risk. The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra is spread across the national parks of Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan. Between them, they hold the island’s last hope for the long-term conservation of its varied plant life and myriad endangered species.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India have a tropical canopy comprised of mixed flora species. Even though it’s isolated from masses of land, it’s still extremely rich with a diversity of wildlife and plant life. Its crystal-clear, azure-blue waters that reflect white, puffy clouds in the sky are only a fraction of what makes these islands beautiful and majestic in character – a treat for any travel lover. Some of the more common wildlife animals of the islands are wild pig, hornbill, Andaman teal, Nicobar pigeon, white-bellied sea eagle, Andaman Cat snake, and other unique species of the India. El Yunque on Puerto Rico’s east side is the only rainforest included in the US National Forest Service and it is known for its rare trees and birds. It is one of the smallest rainforests, but has a diverse habitat. As of January 2018 El Yunque is closed as it recovers from the massive damage sustained during Hurricane Maria, but you can continue to check their website and plan a trip as soon as it reopens. Here are some things to know before you go. Discover more information at https://www.recordandoyunque.store/blogs/news.
